The Libertarian Party's Education (Counter-Counter) Proposal Edit

Note: This is a draft proposal that has yet to go before Parliament.

While we maintain that there are many benefits in Free Market Education, we can recognize that the government of /pol/ is not yet ready to embrace such a system in its entirety. We recognize the necessity of a publicly mandated option, and our proposal for such a system is as follows:

The government will provide an appropriate number of schools for an area based off census results, demographics, and other key considerations. These schools will operate on a standard schedule, the exact particulars of which will be determined by the board of governors and superintendent of each school district.

The size of each school district will be determined at the state level.

Teacher requirements, save their Montessori certification, will be determined by each individual district.

Class sizes will vary be region, but shall never be more than 20 individual students to each teacher. These schools will primarily use the Montessori Method (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montessori_education).

The System/Curriculum: Edit

The Montessori Method is an education approach characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and a respect for a child's natural psychological, physical, and social development. While a range of practices exist, the following are essential:

  • Mixed age classrooms
  • Student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options
  • Uninterrupted blocks of work time
  • A constructivist or "discovery" model, where students learn concepts from working with materials rather than by direct instruction
  • Freedom of movement within the classroom
  • Specialized educational tools/materials
  • A properly trained teacher

As the Montessori system encourages freedom of choice, recommend a curriculum with few required subjects paired with many optional subjects. Each child can choose, for his or her self, what subjects they learn, and progress in those subjects at their own pace.
